Grey Goose Unit

 A. General Info

  1. Waterfowl hunting: geese, ducks, coot & moorhen
  2. Upland game bird hunting: pheasant & snipe
  3. Small game hunting: rabbits
  4. Non-hunting: Dog field trials/training and bird watching

B. All Hunting

  • Access: ONLY by boat to this Unit and the Goodyear Slough to the S. of Lake Herman Rd. and E. of the eastern most RR tracks

  • Archery: allowed (link to summary of archery-specific regulations)
  • ATV’s: NOT allowed
  • Bicycles: ___
  • Boat ramps: available for this Unit and the Goodyear Slough Unit
  • Boat size: boats less than 8 foot long may be used to transport decoys and blind materials
  • Camping & trailers: NOT allowed on any unit except during tule elk season at the Grizzly Island Unit but ONLY with prior written permission from the Area Manager
  • Check Stations: Not applicable
  • Closures:
  1. Flooding: the entire WLA often closes due to flooding
  2. Written permission: NO public use except with prior written permission from the Area Manager after the end of the WF season through Sep. 30
  • Dog hunting: allowed but see our summary of dog hunting/training restrictions
  • Fires: on all units, allowed ONLY in portable gas stoves within parking areas and designated sites
  • Hunt days: Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays except on Christmas Day [§ 551(t)(7)]
  • Hunter capacity: NO limit
  • Juniors: ages 15 and under, require supervision by an adult, 18 years or older
  • Shotguns:
  1. Gauge: 12-gauge max or smaller (e.g. 20-gauge)
  2. Shells: 25 max. while in the field during waterfowl season [§ 551(o)(18)]
  3. Shot: ONLY steel or other non-toxic shot approved by the USFWS

C. Waterfowl Season

  • Decoys: boats less than 8 feet in length may be used for transport decoys/blind materials
  • Hunt days: Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays except on Christmas Day [§ 551(q)(6)]
  • Lottery: n/a
  • Permits: n/a
  • Registration: n/a
  • Shooting hours: one-half (1/2) hour before sunrise until sunset

Pheasant

D. Pheasant Season

  • Hunt days: Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays (except on Christmas) and ONLY on waterfowl hunt days  Day [§ 551(q)(6)] [§ 551(t)(7)]
  • Permits:
  1. Waterfowl shoot days: same as “WF hunting” above
  2. Non-WF shoot days: check station opens at 7:00 a.m. to issue permits
  • Passes: n/a
  • Reservations: ONLY on WF shoot days (see “Waterfowl Season” above)
  1. Availability: ONLY on waterfowl shoot days
  2. Non-WF shoot days: entry is first-come, first-served

F. Snipe Season

Snipe Hunting

  • Hunt days: Saturdays, Sundays and Wednesdays (except on Christmas) and ONLY on waterfowl hunt days  Day [§ 551(q)(6)] [§ 551(t)(7)]

G. Other Activities

  • Closures:
  1. Flooding: the entire WLA often closes due to flooding
  2. Waterfowl season: NO non-hunting uses from Oct. 1 – end of the general WF season
  3. Written permission: NO public use except with prior written permission from the Area Manager after the end of the WF season through Sep. 30
  • Dog field trials & training:
  1. Horses: allowed on all units but ONLY (a) under permit and (b) during organized dog trials
  2. Use: see our summary of dog hunting/training restrictions
  • Fires: on all units, allowed ONLY in portable gas stoves within parking areas and designated sites
  • General use: ONLY from sunrise to sunset except by written permission
  • Passes: a CDFW “Lands Pass” is required for non-hunting recreational purposes (unless the user has a CA license for sport fishing, hunting or trapping) and must be redeemed at the point of entry to get an entry permit.
