Heenan Lake Wildlife Area

On this page, you’ll find area-specific regulations that supplement and/or supersede general use regulations, both of which are a condition for use and incorporated by reference into the entry permit. You’ll also find links to supporting law, websites, directions, hunt maps, and a suggestion box.

Warning shot!!! Remember, federal law also applies (link to our summary of the Migratory Bird Treat Act.) and additional may be located at the Wildlife Area that you can’t find anywhere else (e.g. check station, information kiosks, permits, reservations, road signs, etc.)

    Authorized species: all legal species, but CDFW emphasizes-

  1. Big game: black bear, mule deer
  2. Nongame: coyote
  3. Small game mammals: rabbit and tree squirrel
  4. Upland game birds: mountain quail and blue grouse

  • Directions: From Markleeville drive southeast on State Highway 89. The Wildlife Area entrance is off the south side of Highway 89 approximately two miles past the junction with State Highway 41,653
  • Elevation: 7,000 – 8,000 feet
  • Habitat: Jeffrey Pine forest, next to sagebrush ridges, and meadows adjacent to stream courses

Hunting

    Boats: allowed only during controlled-entry fishing (per CDFW webpage)

  • Camping: NOT allowed (including trailers)
  • Hunt days: daily

Sport Fishing

Warning shot!!! Allowed only during special season under the following conditions:

  • Bait: artificial lures
  • Catch: release
  • Check-in: required
  • Season: During September and October
