California Wildlife Areas

On this menu, you’ll find area-specific rules, regulations and procedures for hunting on California Wildlife Areas (WLA).

Introduction

Area-specific regulations supplement and/or further restrict general regulations, most of which are contained in Title 14 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), Section 550 (ink to our summary of general regulations).  Both general and area-specific regulations supplement the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, so long as the regulations are consistent with the Act (link to our summary of the Act). In addition, CDFW managers have limited discretion to regulate when Sections 550 and 551 are silent.  Some of those rules are located on CDFW’s website, but others can only be found by visiting a wildlife area (check station window, information booths, hunting maps, road signs, etc.).  When possible, we have included those in our summaries.  Finally, there are topic-specific regulations and codes, many of which we have also summarized for your convenience (e.g. archery and hunting with dogs and boating).
